Invented in 1928 by Marcel Breuer, the Cesca chair remains one of the most recognizable seating silhouettes to this day. It is composed of a steel frame and woven rattan seat and backrest. One of the original 1928 Cescas is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is regarded as one of the most important designs of the century.
Breuer’s design has been manufactured by Thonet, Gavina, and was finally purchased by Knoll, where the design remains getting manufactured. These are from the Thonet era of manufacturing, dating from 1927-1950. This particular model is intended to be used as side chairs, so no armrests are present. Each of the chairs measures 31”H x 18”W x 16.5”D and has a black frame on the backrest and seat.
